The Seraghat Hydro Power Project in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh suffered severe damage on Monday after a cloudburst hit nearby Balati in Munsiari area. The sources say that the cloudburst has damaged the hydro project's dam, which is likely to cause flood in the enarby region. However, there were no reports of casualties so far.
The initial reports say that there has been no response from the authorities and no rescue workers had reached the site till the time of this report.
The Munsiari region of Pithoragarh has been receiving heavy rainfall since Sunday night. The cloudburst in Balalti has further worsened the situation as the flood water along with slug has reportedly entered the shops in the market, causing damage to property.
Owing to heavy rains on Sunday, the District Magistrate had given the orders to keep the government and private offices shut on Monday. The schools were also ordered shut due to the weather conditions. The authorities had advised people to remain cautious and adopt all preventive measures.
A helpline number has also been set up. The people were advised to contact district disaster relief team on 05964-228050, 9412079945 or toll free number 1077 if in distress.
Meanwhile, the Indian Metreological Department in Dehradun has advised people to stay off mud paths. "Uttarakhand received heavy rainfall during the past 24 hrs as predicted. Heavy to very heavy rains will lash parts of the state in next 24 hours, there is need to stay alert. We'll issue red alert. Commuters should only use 'pucca road', Bikram Singh, Meteorological department, Dehradun told ANI.
