In a shocking incident, a man was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday for allegedly getting his wife killed at their residence in Jhansi because she refused to reveal her smartphone’s pattern lock code to him.
According to a Times of India report, Poonam Verma was strangulated by her husband Vineet Kumar Diwakar’s friends on August 29.
Her four-year-old daughter raised an alarm when she saw the body the next day. Police immediately registered an FIR and started interrogating Vineet, who claimed of being on a business trip in Kanpur at the time of the crime.
Jhansi SP Dinesh Kumar Singh said that despite Vineet pleading innocence, he remained their prime suspect.
“After sustained interrogation, he broke down on Wednesday and confessed to his crime,” Times of India quoted Singh as saying.
During the interrogation, Vineet told police that because of his business, he had to shuttle between Kanpur and Jhansi very often.
He said that his wife’s behaviour changed abruptly when she bought a smartphone last month.
“She started neglecting me and our four-year-old child. She even installed a pattern lock on her phone so that nobody could open it,” said Vineet.
Dubious of Poonam’s loyalty, Vineet decided to kill her for which he offered Rs 80,000 to his friends Laxman and Kamal.
On August 29, he called Poonam from Kanpur and said that two of his friends would come home and asked her to give them his personal computer.
Laxman and Kamal acted according to the plan and arrived at the house late evening and strangled her. They looted the house and also took away the jewellery to make it look like a robbery case, police said.
