Days after the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government issued notices for former chief ministers to vacate official bungalows in compliance with the Supreme Court orders, former chief minister and BSP chief Mayawati made a sharp political move on Monday when she announced that her bungalow, 13-A, Mall Avenue is a Kashiram Vishramalaya Sthal (Rest House). A board was put on the gate of Mayawati's government bungalow saying the same.
Earlier on Thursday, the UP government issued notices to six former state chief minister's to vacate their official bungalows in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court.
The six chief minister includes Samajwadi patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and former Chief Ministers Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Kalyan Singh and Akhilesh Yadav.
Earlier this month, the apex court had said that former chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh cannot retain government accommodation after demitting office, observing that a chief minister was at par with a common man once his or her term ends. The Supreme Court quashed the law passed by the Akhilesh Yadav government in 2016 granting permanent residential accommodation to former chief ministers of the state.
