After the reports of alleged rape cases in Muzaffarpur and Deoria shelter homes, the Women and Child Development Ministry has directed all such organisations across the country to register themselves with the government.

They have been given two months’ time. They are also required to get a social audit done, ministry sources said.

"The institutes not registered within two months will be shut down and the girls living there will be shifted to a better and registered centre. The ministry has already started closing unregistered centres," an official of the Ministry told IANS.

The move has come after the alleged rape of girls in the shelter homes of Muzaffarpur and Deoria.

The Ministry also issued notice for a social audit of more than 9,000 child care institutes (CCIs) across the country. The same has to be done within 60 days. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will conduct the audit.

It may be recalled that Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, last week, had asked for setting up of Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) at the state and district levels.

CWCs will regularly monitor the Specialised Adoption Agencies (SAA) and CCIs.

The district magistrates should take responsibility of monitoring the adoption programmes which are implemented at the district level. Gandhi had said.
