New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has made it mandatory for applicants to provide their Aadhaar number while applying for any UGC fellowship or scholarship.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, UGC said that “Aadhaar will be used as an identifier for availing benefits of the UGC scholarship/fellowship schemes.”
“The applicants are requested to provide their Aadhaar number while applying for any UGC fellowship/scholarship schemes,” it said in the notice.
Applicants who have already submitted the online applications under various schemes for the year 2017-18 have been asked to update their application forms and provide the Aadhaar number.
The last date for submitting or editing online application has been extended upto August 8 for this purpose.
Since coming to power, Narendra Modi-led NDA government has pushed the move to utilise Aadhaar as the mean to identify people who avail various subsidies and other cash transfer schemes.
The government argues that it would help to cut the leakage of the cash benefits and help identify the real beneficiaries.
