One person has been killed while two others have been critically injured after a house in the central part of Kolkata collapsed on Sunday. The structure collapsed due to heavy rains, said a disaster management official.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 am when a two-storey dilapidated building crumbled down at Baithakkhana Road under the Muchipara police station area of Kolkata, the official said.
The deceased is yet to be identified, said a senior officer adding that the police are unsure if he was a resident of the building or was a pavement dweller.
The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, said the police officer.
"As of now, rescue operations are underway to ascertain if anyone is trapped under the debris. Apart from local councillor, teams of Kolkata Police and state disaster management personnel, along with fire brigade and civil defence officials, have reached the site," the officer added.
