In a sensational twist to the Mumbai leather bag case, film executive Barun Kashyap, who claimed to have been harassed by so-called cow vigilantes who alleged that he was carrying a bag made of cow skin, has confessed that he had made false allegations against the auto driver because he wanted to disrupt communal harmony in the city.
According to a Mumbai Mirror report, Barun in his confessional statement accepted that his Facebook post was a lie and that his 'hatred for Hindus' prompted him to come up with the story.
"I accept that I lied about the entire incident. No such incident ever took place. My Facebook post was a lie. I lied because have hatred towards Hindus."
On August 19, Barun had filed a complaint with Amboli police of an alleged harassment for carrying a leather bag by an autorickshaw driver and two unidentified men believed to be cow vigilantes.
During the investigations, the police found irregularities in Barun's allegations.
"We collected footage of CCTV cameras installed on the entire stretch. We discovered that it was a smooth ride and the auto did not stop even for a minute. It was beyond doubt that he had lied to us,” the report quoted Deven Bharti, joint commissioner of police, as saying, adding a case has been filed against the film executive.
Barun, who was arrested on October 4 and is currently lodged in Arthur Road prison, has been booked under section 153 A (promoting enmity between groups) and 182 B (for use of lawful power of a public servant to injure or annoy any person) of the Indian Penal Code.
If the court convicts him, he can face upto five years in jail.
