Torrential downpour batters Delhi, Gurugram; at least five people killed in rain-related incidents in UP

Heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed in many parts of Delhi on Tuesday. Water-logging was reported from several areas adding to the woes of morning commuters. Gurugram was the worst affected as the rush hour traffic was thrown out of gear. Long traffic jams were witnessed on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and in areas such as Sohna Road, Subhash Chowk. Traffic came to a standstill in Delhi's Dhaula Kuan, RK Puram, Punjabi Bagh, Narela and Dwarka too.

Water logging also led to massive traffic jams in many areas including Huda City Centre, Iffco Chowk, Golf Course road, Hero Honda Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Sohna Road, just to name a few. Traffic has also been severely hit on the Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai highway.

Traffic movement on the Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai highway was severely hit due to waterlogging, Assistant Commissioner of Police Heera Singh said.

"Our team is trying to make the traffic movement smoother," he added.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted heavy rain at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan, Goa, Telangana and Coastal Karnataka on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, at least five people were killed in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday.

A statement issued by the office of UP relief commissioner said, "Five persons died in rain-related incidents across the state in the past 24 hours."

It said one death was reported from Bijnore on Tuesday.

One person died in Unnao, Allahabad, Sultanpur and Jhansi. All these deaths were reported on Monday, the statement said.
