While ticking off a PIL petitioner who prayed for a blanket ban on encroachments of footpaths across the country, the Chief Justice of Supreme Court TS Thakur today said that he can’t order establishment of ‘Ram Rajya’ in the country.
"Do you think with our directions, everything will be done? Do you think we will pass an order that there will be no corruption in the country and all corruption will go? Should we pass an order that there will be 'Ram Rajya' in the country? It cannot be like this," the bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur said.
Making an impassioned argument in favour of his PIL, the petitioner representing NGO ‘Voice of India’ said that he sheds tears of blood seeing the plight of this country.
“I shed tears of blood seeing the plight of this country... footpaths all over the country are taken over... billions of rupees are spent on the salaries of officials and the police, who do nothing,” he was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
Reacting to his argument, CJI Thakur said, “main bhi aansoo ro rahan hoon” (I too am shedding tears).
However, he reminded the petitioner that the Supreme Court cannot do several things it wanted to due to its "limited capacity".
"We want to do various things but we cannot do. Our capacity to do things is limited. This is a problem," he said.
When the bench asked the petitioner to approach the high court first, he said, "how many high courts will I go... This court should hear this matter" and added "where is the rule of law in the country? I have come here with so much hope."
The bench, which had earlier said it would dismiss the plea, later posted it for hearing in February next year.
