Mumbai: The stay on the hike in fare of Mumbai Metro will continue till July 12. A division bench headed by Justice V M Kanade today posted the petitions on the issue for hearing to July 12.

Maharashtra government's planning body MMRDA and others have challenged a report of the union government-appointed Fare Fixation Committee and proposal of the Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) to hike the fares on Versova-Ghatkopar route.

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam too has filed an intervening application challenging the proposed hike.

The HC had on December 17 stayed the proposed hike in fares. MMOPL, a subsidiary of Reliance Energy, challenged the stay in the Supreme Court but the apex court referred it back to the HC for final hearing.

The High Court today said it will hear the petitions on July 12 and the stay will continue till then.

The existing fare has four slabs -- Rs 10, 20, 30 and 40. The proposed fare has five slabs -- Rs 10, 20, 25, 35 and 45.

MMRDA, which commissioned the Mumbai Metro, contends that the increase amounts to undue profiteering.
