Sri Lanka releases Indian fisherman after son's death

"Responding to a request for the release of a Tamil Nadu fisherman in Sri Lankan custody, whose son passed away on February 7, we took up the matter with Sri Lankan authorities," the ministry said in a statement.

India has secured the release of a Tamil Nadu fisherman, whose son died earlier this week, from Sri Lanka, the External Affairs Ministry said on Saturday.

"Responding to a request for the release of a Tamil Nadu fisherman in Sri Lankan custody, whose son passed away on February 7, we took up the matter with Sri Lankan authorities," the ministry said in a statement.

"He has been released and returning to India shortly," it said.

According to the ministry, the release of more than 100 other fisherman is in process.
