Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria and two other officials were on Thursday quizzed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Sheena Bora murder case.
Maria, current DG Home Guards, was the city police chief when the case came to light and Sheena Bora’s mother Indrani Mukerjea was arrested on the allegations of murder.
Besides Maria, JCP Devan Bharti and DCP Satyanarayan Chowdhury were also questioned by investigating agency, PTI reported.
Indrani Mukerjea, with the help of her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyamvar Rai, allegedly strangled her 24-year-old daughter Sheena in April 2012. Sheena's body was then dumped in a forest in neighbouring Raigad district.
The case came to light only last year when Rai was arrested in an unrelated case. Rai has since turned approver in the murder case.
Maria, a high-profile cop who had investigated 1993 Mumbai blast cases, reportedly shown personal interest in the case and had himself interrogated the accused including Indrani Khanna.
He was promoted as Director General of Home Guards and removed from his post as the city police commissioner in middle of the investigation, 22 days before his scheduled promotion.
Maria’s sudden promotion and transfer came as a surprise to many and it was suspected that it had something to do with the case.
Th case was later handed over to CBI which also arrested Indrani Mukerjea’s husband Peter Mukerjea.
The CBI in its charge sheet has alleged that Indrani had kept her husband Peter updated on phone over the selection of spot for disposal of the body.
As per the 200-page charge sheet before the court of special CBI judge H S Mahajan, prime accused Indrani, her husband and former media baron Peter were against the "intimate relationship" between Sheena, Indrani's daughter from earlier relationship, and Rahul, Peter's son from his first wife.
Peter often used to quarrel with Rahul on the issue as he didn't approve of the relationship between Sheena and his son.
According to the charge sheet, Peter always dissuaded his daughter Vidhi from having any contact with Rahul and Sheena.
The charge sheet also stated that a month after Sheena's death, Peter wrote an email to Rahul, which read, "Initially, I was okay with your relationship (with Sheena), as I figured that due to economic pressures it would break anyway as Sheena would want more from life and that she would tell you this and leave you if she didn't get it after a while."
