Eight children were killed and several others injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi after their school minibus collided with a train at an unmanned crossing near Madho Singh Railway station in the district.

The mini bus of Tenderheart School carrying 19 students up to 10 years of age was hit by Varanasi-Allahabad passenger train at gate number 26 between Katka and Madhosingh Railway stations, police said.

The injured have been referred to BHU hospital, police said, adding that the DM and the SP were on the spot to monitor rescue operation.

Unmanned railways crossings are a major cause of accidents involving trains. The railways have tried to either put up gates or post gatemen at thousands of such crossings across the country.

However, railways authorities cite high cost and lack of coordination among various departments for failing to achieve the target.
