Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra today met all four dissenting judges – Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph, over tea before the beginning of day’s work at the top court.
During the meeting, all the officials including the registrar were asked to leave the hall. The CJI also met Justice Chelameswar separately in the hall, say reports. Justice Chelameswar is the second senior-most judge after Justice Misra in the apex court.
However, the meeting was said to be a part of a routine meeting. All the judges including the CJI meet with each other before the court takes up the work after any vacation or weekend. The apex court opens today after two-day holiday.
Meanwhile, Attorney General KK Venugopal has said that the crisis has been resolved.
Terming these developments as ‘a storm in a tea cup’, he said: "Now everything has been settled. The courts are functioning. It was a storm in a tea cup."
Bar Council of India chairman Manan Mishra also confirmed that 'crisis in the top judiciary has been sorted out'.
"It was an internal issue and has now been resolved," he said.
"As you can see that the matter has been laid to rest and all courts rooms in the Supreme Court are functioning normally," he added.
On Sunday, the CJI had assured the Bar Council of India that the crisis will be sorted out soon and congeniality would prevail.
The four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court had on last Friday addressed the media in an unprecedented manner to express their anguish over CJI Dipak Misra’s style of functioning.
Without disclosing what they were upset about, the four judges noted that “they have been compelled to do this”. They even said that "administration of the Supreme Court is not in order and that many things less than desirable have happened in the last few months”.
All four of them said that “they were convinced that for the survival of democracy an impartial judge and justices are needed”.
The four judges along with the CJI comprise in the Collegium – the highest decision-making body of the judiciary.
