In yet another statement that might trigger a possible controversy, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said that it 'was safer to be a cow than a Muslim' at many places in India. Tharoor's remarks comes close on the heels of his "Hindu Pakistan" statement that invited criticism from his political opponents.

Besides Tharoor, CPI(M) leder Sitaram Yechury also attacked Modi govt over the issue. “This is the track-record of ‘Vikas’ that Modi has unleashed in past 4 years. His ministers justify these, as these killers are born, fed and nurtured by Sangh’s ideology of communal hatred,”  Sitaram Yechury tweeted, quoting a news report.

The remarks came days after 28-year-old Akbar Khan was lynched by a mob in Rajasthan's Alwar district on suspicion of cow smuggling. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had condemned the incident and had assured an investigation in the case. “The incident of alleged lynching of a person transporting bovines in Alwar district is condemnable. Strictest possible action shall be taken against the perpetrators,” Raje had tweeted.
