Speaking on topics like freedom and responsibility of media, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said that “regulation is needed in everything”.
“Some people say what is this regulation? There is regulation needed for everything. Whether it is self-regulation or legal regulation that has to be decided by the society,” said Naidu during 3rd Justice JS Verma Memorial Lecture organised by News Broadcasters Association (NBA).
“A certain amount of regulation is required for order. But regulation should never become a strangulation. My opinion is self-regulation is the best solution and I hope media organisations under associate bodies will introspect on the issues flagged by me,” said the Vice President.
“I’m not trying to undermine the importance of the media and the great service media and journalism are doing to this country. There are a number of instances where media was on the forefront to unearth corruption, fight against suppression, bring out the reality of the picture…and also create strong public opinion,” Naidu further said.
At the same event while speaking about the role of media NBA president Rajat Sharma said news channels are working with responsibility and without fear of the government.
“We will always remember Justice Verma’s contribution and we will always be grateful to Justice Raveendran for his contribution for making news channels more responsible, more meaningful,” Sharma said.
“Today, because of Justice Raveendran any viewer can easily complain against any news channel. And the way actions are being taken on these complaints, with the help of independent members, have made the news channels more responsible,” NBA president said.
“Many people may have complaints with news channels…The government thinks that opposition gets more time on news channels. And opposition thinks that news channels are afraid of the government. All this is wrong. Those who work in newsroom fulfill their responsibilities without any fear or pressure,” Sharma clarified.
Justice R. V. Raveendran was also present during the event.
