Record 31 Indian institutes in World University Rankings 2016-17

Marking a significant improvement in the number of higher education institutions ranked among the world’s best, India registered its presence with a record 31 varsities in a new list of the world's top universities topped by the University of Oxford.

Marking a significant improvement in the number of higher education institutions ranked among the world’s best, India registered its presence with a record 31 varsities in a new list of the world's top universities topped by the University of Oxford. 

Besides, IISc, 30 more Indian institutions have featured in the list of 980 best universities from 70 countries. 

The prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has climbed around 50 positions in the World University Rankings 2016-17 released by the Times Higher Education (THE) yesterday.

The institute, established in 1909 with active support from Jamsetji Tata and HH Sir Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore, has found a place in the 201-250 group of best universities, making it country’s top-ranked varsity. 

United Kingdom’s University of Oxford ranked first in the list. It has also become the first UK versity to top the list in last 12 years. California Institute of Technology is at second place, followed by Stanford University, University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

At number nine, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich) is the lone non-US and UK institution in the top 10. 

While IIT, Bombay has find place in the 351-400 group of best universities, IIT, Delhi, IIT, Kanpur and IIT, Madras have found place in 401-500 group.

IIT, Kharagpur, IIT, Roorkee, Jadavpur University have found place in 501-600 group where as Aligarh Muslim University and BITS, Pilani are in 601-800 group of best universities.

Tezpur University from Assam and Amity University, IIT Guwahati, Panjab University, Amrita University, Andhra University, National Institute of Technology (Rourkela), Sri Venkateswara University, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research have also found a place in the list.
