Days after floods ravaged Kerala, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has embarked on a two-day visit to the devastated state. During his visit, the Congress chief is visiting relief camps, taking aerial surveys and meeting people affected by the deluge.
Gandhi, who arrived in Thiruvananthapuram at around 10:30 this morning from abroad, visited relief camps in Chengannur and heard the woes of the people.
The Congress chief first visited the relief camp at the Christian College and spoke to people at the centre. He also visited a camp at an engineering college. Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala and Congress's state unit president MM Hassan were among those present at the camps. Later, he took an aerial survey of the region.
The Opposition leader also met fishermen and party volunteers involved in relief work.
Today, he is also scheduled to visit the relief camps at Chalakuddy in Thrissur district and at Paravoor in Ernakulam district. Tomorrow, Rahul Gandhi will flag off relief material trucks at Kochi's marine Drive and visit relief camps in Wayanad district.
According to data released this morning by the Disaster Management's state control room, 474 persons have died in the rains and floods since May 29, when the South West Monsoon set over Kerala. Fifteen persons are missing.
