Schools and colleges in Kashmir valley have today reopened after a three-month-long winter break. The break got little extended this year as valley saw an extended winter. Kashmir usually remains in grip of extremely cold weather during the Chilai Kalan. Chilai Kalan -- the 40 day period where valley experiences heavy snow -- normally starts from December 21. In this period the Kashmir Valley and adjoining areas receive heavy snowfall combined with a cold wave, making normal life difficult.
Schools normally are closed for a three-month period. This time schools in Srinagar and adjoining areas are opening a week later.
