President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Wednesday.

Born on November 14, 1889, Pandit Nehru was among the central figures in Indian politics before and after independence. A close-aide of Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle, Nehru was known as Chacha Nehru among children. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Children's Day across India.
Paying homage to 'India's first and the longest serving Prime Minister', Congress party said that Pt Jawaharlal Nehru dedicated his life to the nation. "He laid the foundations of strong democratic institutions which shaped our modern day democracy. Today we honour the man & the legacy," the party said.
