A BSF jawan was martyred and seven civilians injured in heavy shelling by Pakistan on Thursday morning in Jammu district's R.S.Pura and Arnia sectors of the International Border (IB).
Head Constable Jitendra kumar who was injured by a splinter in the shelling by Pakistan this morning in Abdullian(J&K), later succumbed to injuries. Kumar, a resident of Motihari joined the force in 1991.
"Seven persons including five women belonging to two families of Goparbasti village of R.S.Pura sector were injured overnight as Pakistan Rangers targeted civilian areas," the police said.
Intermittent shelling and firing exchanges were still continuing in the sector that started late Wednesday night.
"After Pakistan Rangers used 82 mm mortar shells to target civil and Border Security Force (BSF) facilities in R.S.Pura, the BSF retaliated effectively using same calibre weapons," police sources said.
"Shelling and firing exchanges took place in Korotana Kurd, Bidipur, Jattan, Abdullian, Chandu Chak, Shamka and Hansu Chak areas."
After today’s violation, the number of those injured in Pakistani firing since last week has risen to 31, while three people, a BSF personnel and a six-year-old boy, have been killed.
People in R S Pura and Arnia sectors had a sleepless night as the shelling was so intense that it was audible even upto 20 kms away.
Loud explosions could still be heard in these areas.
Pakistani troops had violated the ceasefire in the same region on Wednesday night and targeted Indian posts with heavy mortar and small arms firing.
On Wednesday, the Indian deputy high commissioner was summoned by Pakistan for the second consecutive day to protest against “unprovoked ceasefire violations” along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.
