Reacting to the ongoing controversy over Netflix web series “Sacred Games”, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that unlike the BJP and the RSS, he believed that freedom of expression was a fundamental democratic right.
The web series courted controversy after a Congress worker filed a complaint in Kolkata against the streaming platform, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the producers for using an ‘objectionable word’ to describe late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
However, in a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said that views of a character on a fictional web series can never change the services that his father rendered to the country.
“BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right. My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
Sacred Games, directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, was produced in partnership with Phantom Films.
In the web series, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays the role of Ganesh Gaitonde, a Mumbai gangster, reportedly used an ‘objectionable word’ against former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
