A furious Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped the Bihar government over the horrific Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case and asked why the authorities failed to inspect these 'horror homes'.
"Girls are raped left, right and centre. Every six hours a girl raped in the country," an infuriated Supreme Court said citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau.
Hearing a case related to sexual assault and torture of nearly 30 girls at a shelter home in Muzaffarpur, the Supreme Court expressed dismay over the Nitish Kumar government's failure to inspect what was going on at the shelter home which was being run on government money by an NGO.
"Money are given to these NGOs managing shelter homes since 2013 but the Bihar government didn't inspect them," the Supreme Court observed.
The state government told the court that as many as nine FIRs have been filed and ten people, including Brajesh Thakur whose NGO operated the shelter home, have been arrested so far in the case.
Thakur is said to be owning an English newspaper News Next and an Urdu journal 'Haalaat-e-Bihar'. The publications have been getting advertisements from the state government for quite long but the same was stopped in June after he was made an accused in the case. Besides, Thakur's accreditation with PIB, New Delhi, was cancelled last week.
Earlier in the day, the Patna High Court accepted the Bihar government's request to take up monitoring of CBI investigation into the case and ensure its speedy trial by appointing a special judge.
