The candidature of Mohammad Farooq Khan as a BJP nominee in Jammu and Kashmir local body elections has stirred a big controversy in the state.

Mohammad Farooq Khan is facing a number of allegations including his country of origin, the time he spent in jail, etc.

However, the BJP candidate has dismissed all these allegations.

"I didn't come from Nepal. I came a long ago. I've completed my jail term of 10.5 years. Also, I'm going to file FIR against those who've said that I came from Nepal, if they don't apologise," he told news agency ANI.

“I was in Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front & Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. After coming out of prison, I formed J&K Human Welfare Organisation for rehabilitation of ex-militants. No one supported me, not even those for whom I picked gun. I didn't know they were only counting notes. I didn't surrender on rehabilitation policy,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

He also complained of being abused earlier and even now though he is working for peace. He claimed to win the election and spend his money on rehabilitation of ex-militants & their children's education. Despite all odds he is hopeful to manage to work for the welfare of the people.

Mohammad Farooq Khan was born in 1970 in Barbarshah area of downtown Srinagar. He is son of a cloth merchant. He studied at Hindu High school in Srinagar and then joined Sri Pratab Singh College for graduation.

He was one among hundreds of youths crossing the Line of Control to train in arms usage. In 1990, Mohammad Farooq Khan joined the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), a militant group seeking independence from both India and Pakistan.
