UP Congress to discuss poor show at meeting in Lucknow

A week after the Lok Sabha results pinned the Congress down to its worst performance in Uttar Pradesh, the party will take stock of the situation and discuss reasons or its poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

A meeting of party office bearers will be held later in the evening in which UPCC President Raj Babbar will be present.

This is Babbar's first visit to Lucknow after he sent his resignation to Congress President Rahul Gandhi last week, owning moral responsibility for the drubbing.

Rahul Gandhi lost his Amethi seat to BJP's Smriti Irani while Raj Babbar lost to BJP's Rajkumar Chahar from Fatehpur Sikri.

The Congress won only one seat in Uttar Pradesh - Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli.

The Congress, which had contested 67 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, managed to rank at the second position only in three seats: Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, Raj Babbar in Fatehpur Sikri and Shri Prakash Jaiswal in Kanpur.

Tejashwi not leader of Grand Alliance, but of RJD: Manjhi

After the Congress, another ally of the RJD-led Grand Alliance, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) chief and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Thursday targeted Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, saying the latter is the leader of RJD, not of the Grand Alliance.

A week after the RJD-led opposition's rout in the Lok Sabha elections in Bihar, Manjhi has made it clear here that, at this juncture, the leader of the Grand Alliance for the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls has not been not finalised.

"Tejashwi is leader of RJD but he is not the leader of the Grand Alliance", he said.

Manjhi said the Grand Alliance allies, including, Congress, RJD, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), HAM and the Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP) would sit together to decide about the leader of the Grand Alliance.

Referring to the Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) decision, taken at its poll debacle review meeting on Wednesday to name of Tejashwi Yadav as the Grand Alliance leader, Manjhi said such a decision could only be taken by the Grand Alliance, not the RJD.

BSP sees no need to introspect over election results

Even as other political parties have gone into a huddle, dissecting their failure in the Lok Sabha elections, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) refuses to introspect on the issue.

Immediately after the Lok Sabha results were announced, BSP President Mayawati issued a statement blaming the EVMs for the poor performance of opposition parties.

Later, she held a meeting with her 10 newly elected MPs in Delhi in which she has given them basic directives about their role in Parliament.

She reportedly told them that their stand on various issues would be conveyed to them on a daily basis and they should act accordingly.

Party sources said that since the BSP had won 10 seats, compared to zero in 2014, and the party had also improved its vote percentage, Mayawati did not find any reason for introspection.

She has even refused to react to reports of Dalits being beaten up at several places, including Mainpuri, by Samajwadi Party workers who believe the BSP vote was not transferred to their candidates.

Mayawati has also been maintaining a studied silence on the future of the SP-BSP alliance.

Modi to take oath as PM today

Capping a landslide election victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take oath along with a new council of ministers on Thursday for a second term, as suspense mounted on who will get the Big Four berths--Home, Finance, Defence and External Affairs.

Top opposition leaders including Congress President Rahul Gandhi and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, corporate honchos, film stars, chief ministers and a galaxy of leaders from BIMSTEC countries will be on hand to watch President Ram Nath Kovind administer the oath of office and secrecy to 68-year-old Modi and his ministerial colleagues at the forecourt of majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan.
