The nation mourns as one of the most humble, simple and successful leaders of our times has left us. Goa Chief Minister and Former Defence Minister Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar died on Sunday after a protracted battle with pancreatic cancer for over a year.
A four-term chief minister and former defence minister, Parrikar had been battling a pancreatic ailment since February last year.
Parrikar, 63, was heading the Goa Assembly as Chief Minister till the very last day of his battle with the deadly disease. It will take a while for Goans to come to terms with the fact their IITian CM is not more.
But the sorrow is being felt across the nation. Tributes have poured in from leaders from across the party lines and the general public. The Centre government has declared Monday as the day of mourning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Goa on Monday morning to pay tribute to chief minister Manohar Parrikar. Modi left for Goa soon after the Union Cabinet meeting, which was convened to condole the demise of Parrikar. The Goa chief minister's body has been kept at the BJP office in Panaji for the party leaders and workers to pay their last respects. From there, his body would be taken to Kala Academy, around three km away, to allow the public pay their tribute to him.

The Union Cabinet Monday condoled the demise of Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, saying he will be remembered for his simplicity and as an exceptional administrator. After observing a two-minute silence, the Cabinet also passed a resolution which said, in his death the country has lost an able administrator who was affectionately called the "chief minister of commoners." Shri Parrikar will be remembered for his simplicity and his abilities as an exceptional administrator. His contribution to the building of modern Goa and to the modernization of India's Armed Forces as well as improvement to the lives of ex-Servicemen will never be forgotten, the resolution read.

People throng Panaji streets to pay last respect to Parrikar
Thousands of people thronged the streets of the state capital to catch a final glimpse of Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, as his mortal remains was brought to the BJP office here for party workers to pay their last respect. His remains would be taken to Kala Academy, around three km from the BJP office, later on Monday, to allow the public pay their tribute to him.
A pall of gloom descended on the BJP office and hundreds of Parrikar supporters turned emotional when his mortal remains, wrapped in the tricolour, was brought there. The truck carrying the 63-year-old chief minister's body travelled 5 km from his private residence in Dona Paula to Panaji, as people tried to catch sight of the popular leader, who rose from the small coastal state to become the country's defence minister. The area around the BJP office in the heart of the capital city was packed with people who arrived there to pay tributes to Parrikar before his final journey.

Seven-day mourning in Goa
Seven-day mourning has been declared in Goa, following the death of its chief minister Manohar Parrikar. All the state government offices, local autonomous bodies, public sector undertakings, all educational institutions including aided institutions shall remain closed today. High Court of Bombay at Goa and District Courts in the state will also remain shut today.

Manohar Parrikar to be accorded state funeral with full military honours at Miramar beach
Goa chief minister and former defence minister Manohar Parrikar would be accorded state funeral with full military honours on Monday, according to the home ministry. MHA Joint Secretary S K Shahi, in an order issued on Sunday, said the Ministry of Defence is requested to make arrangements for state funeral with full military honours.
The final rites of Parrikar will be performed at 5 pm on Monday at the Miramar beach here, next to the memorial of Goa's first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar, who was also cremated there.

Senior BJP leader LK Advani termed Manohar Parrikar fighter and bold as he paid him homage. In his condolence message, Advani said that he was extremely sad to learn about Parrikar's demise.

The Union Cabinet will meet today to condole the demise of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The special cabinet meeting would be held at 10 am. A two-minute would be observed in his memory and a resolution would also be passed hailing Parrikar's contribution as a public figure, official sources said.
Whenever a senior leader of any political party, or a minister passes, the Union Cabinet meets to condole the demise. -

Goa Archbishop condoles Parrikar's demise
The Goa Church has condoled the demise of Manohar Parrikar, claiming that the chief minister sometimes sought its opinion before taking "far-reaching decisions for the benefit of the state". We acknowledge gratefully the respect and consideration he had for the church authorities in this state, Archbishop of Goa and Daman Fr Filipe Neri Ferrao said in a condolence message on Sunday.
"He would sometimes seek their opinion before coming out with far-reaching decisions for the benefit of the state," Ferrao said. His appreciation for the contribution of the Catholic educational institutions in Goa was well-known, he said.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi pays homage to Parrikar
Congress President Rahul Gandhi Sunday condoled the demise of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and described him as "one of Goa's favourite sons". He said Parrikar was respected and admired across party lines and had bravely battled his illness for over a year.
"I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Goa CM, Shri Manohar Parrikar Ji, who bravely battled a debilitating illness for over a year. Respected and admired across party lines, he was one of Goa's favourite sons. My condolences to his family in this time of grief(sic)," Gandhi said on Twitter.
The Congress on its official Twitter handle also said, “We condole the passing of former Union Minister & Chief Minister @manoharparrikar. We hope that his family finds strength in their moment of grief.”

State funeral to be held today
The last rites of Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar will be performed at Miramar in Panaji on Monday evening. Parrikar's mortal remains will be kept at the BJP head office from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Monday, before shifting them to the Kala Academy, where general public can pay their respects between between 11 am and 4 pm. Parrikar's final journey will begin after 4 pm when his remains will be taken to Miramar area in a procession. The final rites will be performed at 5 pm.
