A potentially catastrophic collision between two flights of Air India and IndiGo was averted at the last moment today morning at Delhi's busy IGI Airport.

The incident took place around 11 am when Goa-bound Air India flight number 156 was about to take off and IndiGo flight 6E-398 from Ranchi was landing on the same runway.

The Air India flight with 120 people onboard was rolling at almost 185 km per hours when the pilot was forced to abort the take off.

Lack of communication at the Air Traffic Control (ATC) was perhaps the reason behind the mishap, though there has been no official word on it yet.

The Air India flight, Airbus A-320, had to return to the terminal for rechecks of the emergency equipment before taking off for its destination.

As per reports, the Air India flight was set to take off from the runway number 27 and IndiGo plane was making a landing at the runway number 28.

Both the runways of the IGI can’t be used simultaneously as they merge at a point towards Dwarka side. When the ATC learnt about the timings of both the flights, it immediately directed the Air India pilot flight Capt. Amit Tyagi to reject the take off.

The IGI Airport is one the busiest airports in the country. It is spread over an area of 5,106 acres and operates 800 flights daily (approximately).
