New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued notices to the Union Home Secretary, Chief Secretary and Jammu and Kashmir government seeking reports in connection with the ongoing violence in the state.
The NHRC has given them two weeks to respond.
"The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports about numerous casualties and injuries in the clashes between the protesters and the security forces in the Valley in Jammu and Kashmir,” NHRC said in a statement.
"It has observed that it is closely watching the incidents of violence in the aftermath of the killing of alleged militant Burhan Wani in an encounter with the security forces on July 8, 2016," statement added.
"Expressing its utmost concern over the developments, the Commission has issued notices to the Union Home Secretary and the Chief Secretary and government of Jammu and Kashmir calling for reports in the matter. The Commission has given two weeks to respond," it said.
Violent protests erupted in the Kashmir valley after Hizbul Muhahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter with the security forces earlier this month. The Valley has been under curfew since then, which entered 11th day today.
In clashes with security forces over the days, at least 41 civilians have lost their lives. One policeman was also killed in the violence.
Over 3500 people have been injured in violent clashes between protesters and security forces.
