A jawan was martyred and two militants were killed this morning in a gunfight with the security forces in north Kashmir's Bandipora district.
According to police, troops of the 13 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group (SOG) surrounded Manzpora village at night following information about the presence of militants.
"With the break of dawn, the flushing out operation was started when the hiding militants opened indiscriminate fire causing critical injuries to a soldier, who later succumbed," a senior police officer said.
Two militants were also killed in the operation, he added.
Firing exchanges have stopped in the area, but a combing operation is on.
In another operation in Tujjar village of Baramulla district, security forces surrounded a house where a local militant is reportedly hiding.
"The holed up local militant is being persuaded to surrender," the police said.
Militants attack police station in Kupwara district
Last night, militants had a police station in Handwara area of Kupwara district, but there was no report of any loss of life in the firing.
