Srinagar: In a fresh encounter with security forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, two unidentified militants have been killed so far, the army said. The gun fight is still ongoing in the valley.

Acting on specific information about the presence of militants in Putshai area of Lolab in the district, security forces cordoned off the area and began a search operation today, an army official said.

He said as the search operation was going on, militants who were hiding there fired upon the forces resulting in a gun battle.

"Two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Patushai village today," said a senior police official.

"Security forces including Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops and the special operations group (SOG) of state police started an operation in the early hours of Thursday morning after receiving information about the presence of a group of militants."

"The exact identity of the slain militants is being established. Search operation is ongoing in the area," the official added.
