Two Army soldiers were martyred and one terrorist was gunned down during an encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir early on Tuesday, the Indo-Asian News Service reported. One armyman sustained injuries during the gunfight, said sources, adding the injured soldier was taken to the hospital for treatment.
A cordon and search operation was launched by the security forces in Ratnipora area in south Kashmir after they had received specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
As news about the gun battle spread, youth in the area engaged in clashes with the security forces to disrupt the operation.
The search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired on the forces who retaliated.
Mobile Internet services in the district were suspended. Rail services between the Bannihal town of Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley have also been suspended for the day.
