Surat: The Income Tax department has slapped Rs 750 crore fine on arrested controversial godman Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai after it unearthed Rs 2,500 crore worth of unaccounted transactions of both.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Mukesh Patel, 42 bags containing crores of rupees were recovered during their raid, after which the IT decided to slap fine on the duo. Both are currently in prison, accused of rape in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
“'Raids against both the spiritual gurus had led to recovery of hoards of cash and property papers,” he said on Friday.
Patel also said that besides taking the bags into their possession, officials also recovered several bags containing property documents, computers, CDs, laptops and other materials relating to investments, bank deposits, shares and real estate.
Lawyer of the self-styled godman, Kalpesh Desai, also confirmed that IT had imposed a fine on both Asaram and his son.
Asaram had allegedly sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl at his ashram near Jodhpur in 2013, following which he was arrested. Later, a Surat-based woman had accused him of raping her repeatedly between 1997 and 2006 during her stay at his ashram.
