New Delhi: Keeping in mind the Centre's Smart Cities Mission, the UGC has asked all Central Universities to start graduate and undergraduate courses in Urban Planning.
In a letter to Vice Chancellors of all Central Universities, UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu said that the Prime Minister has launched Smart Cities Mission unveiling the roadmap for development of 500 cities.
"In the presentation made to the Hon'ble Prime Minister, it was emphasised that towns and cities are emerging as key drivers of economic growth, hence the economic growth model of a city should form an essential part of its vision," Sandhu said in his letter to VCs.
It was proposed that Colleges and Universities should start subject courses on urban planning, he added.
The senior UGC official asked Universities to start a subject or course on Urban Planning.
He also asked them to convey relevant instructions to the Colleges and institutes affiliated to them to take urgent steps for starting of this new subject course at graduate and post graduate level.
