Dismissing the perception poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation that ranked India as world's most dangerous country for women, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday pointed out that the countries that have been ranked after India have women who are not even allowed to speak in public.

Reacting to the perception poll, National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma also claimed that that the sample size was small and could not be representative of the whole country.

"Women are very aware in India of issues and there is no way that we could be ranked number 1 in such a survey. The countries that have been ranked after India have women who are not even allowed to speak in public," Sharma said, without naming a specific country.

The perception poll by Thomson Reuters Foundation had ranked India as the most dangerous country in the world for women.

According to the Reuters Foundation, 548 experts on women’s issues were asked questions relating to risks faced by women in six areas including healthcare, access to economic resources and discrimination, customary practices, sexual violence, nonsexual violence, and human trafficking. 43 of these 548 experts are from India.

If this perception poll is to be believed, India is more dangerous for women than war-torn Afghanistan (at 2nd place in the list), Syria (3rd place) and Somalia (4th place).

Saudi Arabia is at the 5th place while Pakistan occupies 6th spot in this survey.

In 2011 perception poll by the same foundation, Pakistan (3rd place) was ranked above India (4th place) while Afghanistan had topped the list with Congo at second place and Somalia at 5th place.

The 2018 perception poll claimed  that India was ranked as the most dangerous on three of the topic questions – the risk of sexual violence and harassment against women, the danger women face from cultural, tribal and traditional practices, and the country where women are most in danger of human trafficking including forced labour, sex slavery and domestic servitude.
