The proliferation of Information Technology and related services has led to a rise in the number of cyber security incidents in the country as elsewhere in the world, the Parliament was informed today.
As per the information reported to and tracked by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a total number of 41,319, 44679, 49,455 and 39,730 cyber security incidents were observed during the year 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 (till October), respectively.
The types of cyber security incidents include phishing, scanning/probing, website intrusions and defacements, virus/malicious code, and Denial of Service attacks.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data show that a total of 5,693, 9,622 and 11,592 incidents have been registered during 2013, 2014 and 2015 for various cyber crimes under Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 and related Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections.
Maharashtra has reported maximum number of cyber crimes in last three years – 907 (2013), 1879 (2014) and 2195 (2015). It is followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh where 4627 and 3000 such cases were reported, respectively.
The Parliament was informed that the government has signed 11 bilateral MoU/agreements for exchange of information in the area of cyber security, combating cyber crime & cyber space and cyber relationship.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has also allocated Rs 500 crore in the 12th five year Plan period (2012-17) for Cyber Security Programme including Cyber Safety, Security and Surveillance, Cyber Crime Investigations and Cyber Forensics.
