New Delhi: Union Human Resource Development ministry has hiked the annual fees for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) from the present Rs.90,000 to Rs.2 lakh.

The annual fee for undergraduate courses in all 23 branches of the Indian Institute of Technology will be hiked from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh from the upcoming academic year, Ministry of Human Resource Development officials told PTI.

The steep hike is based on a new model where the entire running costs would be borne by the IITs, thus reducing its dependence on the government funding. The latter will only pay for capital assets such as labs and support infrastructure creation.

On Wednesday, the HRD minister promised a fee waiver for all SC/ST, Dalit and physically challenged students of the 23 branches of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

Last month, an IIT panel had approved a proposal for a three-fold hike in annual fees however HRD minister Smriti Irani who chairs the IIT Council, the highest decision-making body of all the 23 IITs, had to take the final decision.

Not just the tuition fee, the panel also proposed the introduction of a nationwide aptitude test to select the students aspiring to join the elite technical institutes.
