M Durga Devi, the head constable of Chennai Police, has alleged that she was molested by the jallikattu protestors who set the Ice House police station on fire.
Durga Devi told Times of India that she was standing with five of her colleagues near the barricade in front of the police station when nearly 200 men marched towards them.
"They hurled stones which left me with injuries to my shoulders. They also grabbed and pushed me around," she told TOI.
"Had they cornered me inside the police station, things could have turned ugly. The horror refuses to leave me. They kept targeting me," she added.
Durga Devi further revealed that she and her colleagues tried to stop the advancing protestors but they were soon overwhelmed .
She alleged that many in the mob touched her inappropriately and kept hurling stones. The situation went out of control soon and Durga Devi ran inside the police station while her colleagues ran to the adjacent street.
The mob damaged the building, poured petrol over it and set it afire.
Durga Devi who was hiding in a darkened room managed to get hold of a wireless and alerted the control room.
A police team arrived after some time, chased away the protesters and pulled her out of the burning station after breaking a window.
Based on the report of Durga Devi and her colleagues, Police commissioner S George has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
"This act of the miscreants will not be tolerated. We have video footage of the people who charged at her. They will be taken to task," a police officer told TOI.
