New Delhi: Cloudburst incident was reported from Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district this morning, with reports suggesting that floods caused many cars and other vehicles to be washed away.
The incident took place at around 5 am. The incident has caused widespread chaos and damage across the region. However, no loss of life was reported.
An official said that the Badrinath highway has been closed due to a heavy landslide and efforts are on to resume the traffic. Also a motor workshop was washed away in the flooding.
"Many houses were damaged in the cloudburst. One motor workshop was washed away completely,” a local said.
Soon after the local administration learnt about the incident, they rushed a team to the spot to have a detailed account of the situation. The affected families are being shifted to safer places.
Rescue and relief operations have been slow because of the rain which is continuing since morning.
The weather department has sounded a rain alert in various parts of the state. Due to continuous rain, the water level in several rivers is increasing and the situation is being monitored by the authorities.
In June 2013, the flash floods triggered by very heavy rainfall and cloudburst in the state had affected 12 out of the 13 districts in Uttarakhand. The 4 districts that were worst affected were Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh.
