North India reels under extreme heat wave, labourer dies in Punjab's Kapurthala; Sriganganagar touches 47 degrees Celsius
The heat wave in North India claimed a life on Monday after a labourer died from heat stroke in Punjab's Kapurthala.
A heat wave swept across North India on Monday. Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan witnessed blistering heat as temperature hovered above normal in most of the regions.
Blistering heat claimed the life of a labourer in Punjab's Kapurthala. The deceased has been identified as Satnam Singh (42), a resident of Sundernagar locality. Singh fell unconscious after returning from work yesterday, his family said. He was immediately rushed to a local civil hospital where he died.
Civil Hospital Dr Gurmej Singh Sahota said Singh died after suffering a heat stroke.
Heat wave in Punjab and Haryana:
Heat wave sweeping most parts of Haryana and Punjab for the past several days continued unabated today, with Hisar once again turning out to be the hottest place in the two states at 45.5 degrees Celsius.
Hisar in Haryana recorded a three degrees above normal maximum temperature, Meteorological Department report said.
Among other places in Haryana, blistering heat swept Bhiwani, which recorded a high of 44 degrees Celsius while Narnaul, too, had a hot day at 43.5 degrees Celsius.
Karnal and Ambala, too, reeled under hot weather conditions recording respective maximum temperatures of 42.6 degrees Celsius and 42.8 degrees Celsius, both three notches above normal limits.
In Punjab, Amritsar had a hot day at 43.6 degrees Celsius, up three notches against normal limits.
Ludhiana and Patiala, too, experienced the hot weather recording respective maximum temperatures of 43.6 degrees Celsius and 43.7 degrees Celsius, both settling three notches above normal limits.
There was no relief in sight from the current spell of heat wave for the people in Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, which today recorded a high of 42.5 degrees Celsius, up three degrees against normal limits.
According to the MeT forecast, heat wave conditions are likely to prevail at isolated places in Haryana and Punjab until tomorrow.

Heatwave conditions continue to prevail at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh. On Sunday, day temperatures were above normal in Allahabad, Agra, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad and Jhansi, according to the MeT department.
Rains/thunderstorm are likely to occur at isolated places in east Uttar Pradesh on May 29, while the weather is likely to remain dry in west UP, it said.

Heat wave conditions continued to prevail in most parts of the state, with Sriganganagar registering the hottest day at 47.1 degrees Celsius.
Alwar recorded the hottest day yesterday at 47 degrees Celsius.
Barmer recorded 46.9 degrees Celsius, followed by 46.5 degrees Celsius in Kota, 46.4 degrees Celsius each in Jaisalmer and Churu, 46 degrees Celsius in Bikaner, 45.1 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur, 44.4 degrees Celsius in Ajmer, 44.2 degrees Celsius in Jaipur, 43.5 degrees Celsius in Dabok, 43.2 degree Celsius in Pilani.
The Meteorological department has forecast the weather is likely to remain dry in the state in the next 24 hours.
Heat wave in national capital
The national capital and its surrounding regions were not spared from the blistering heat. The NCR continued to reel under heat wave conditions with the maximum temperature settling at 43.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average.
The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.2 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, said a Meteorological department official.
The humidity oscillated between 60 and 19 per cent, the official said.
The Met office has forecast overcast skies, along with the possibility of a dust storm and thunderstorm, towards evening for tomorrow.
"The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 43 and 28 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said.
Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 44.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 26.3 degrees Celsius.
