The 56-hour-long encounter between terrorists and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Handwara ended on Sunday. Two terrorists were killed and five security personnel, including three CRPF inspectors and two officers of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were martyred earlier during the gunfight, which had entered the third day on Sunday.
Five other security personnel were also injured during the encounter, which broke out at Babagund area of Kralgand in the district on Friday (March 1).
One civilian was also killed in the clashes that broke out close to the encounter site.
A search operation was underway in the area as the operation continues. The security forces had received information about the presence of militants in the area.
According to an army official, the identity and group affiliation of the slain militants is being ascertained, he said. The official, however, did not give any further details.
A police spokesperson on Friday said four security force personnel – two policemen and two Central Reserve Police Force men, including an inspector - were killed in the gunfight.
The spokesperson said one civilian, Waseem Ahmad Mir, also sustained bullet injuries "in the nearby area" and later succumbed at a hospital.
