Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the lord of new beginnings.
Devotees throng temples, worship Lord Ganesha and offer sweets, particularly laddoos (modak).
People across the country, especially in Maharashtra install the deity's idol at home and at elaborate pandals to celebrate the festival.
The festival lasts for 10 days with the final immersion - also called the Visarjan - of an idol of Lord Ganesha.
