The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) today arrested five people with Rs 1.34 crore from Chennai airport, all in new denomination notes of Rs 2,000.
As per reports, the DRI officials took all five of them into custody after having suspicion over the black plastic bag which the accused were carrying.
The latest seizure comes a day after the I-T department raided the house and office of Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and recovered Rs 30 lakh cash in new notes and 5 kgs of gold.
In Karnataka’s Hubli, police late last night arrested three youths with Rs 39.38 lakhs in new denomination notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500.
Police said that they had specific input about the transportation of huge cash in the city and that all the three were on bike when taken into custody.
“We are questioning them trace further links. They are Rizwan, Mukthar and Sami Ahmed. They were transporting new currency in Honda Activa bike. A police team intercepted them... they could not show the proper documents,” police said.
Earlier this morning, police in national capital said that they have arrested a person with Rs 31 lakh in old currency notes from city’s New Delhi Railway Station.
According to reports, the Income Tax Department has been informed about the incident and further investigation in the case are underway.
Post government's demonetisation decision on November 8, the I-T, Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other investigation agencies have been conducting raids to crackdown on illegal money launderers and have unearthed wealth amounting to crore of rupees.
