Hyderabad: The hope of getting cured from asthma drew thousands of patients from various parts of the country to Hyderabad on Wednesday. The unique cure comes in the form of the famous 'fish prasadam'.
The Bathini Goud family, which administers the 'fish prasadam', began the exercise at the Exhibition Grounds at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Members of the family were administering the fish stuffed with a herbal paste —believed to be a cure for asthma and other breathing ailments.
The 'fish prasadam' is administered on the day of 'Mrigasira Karthe', which usually falls on June 7 or 8, the organisers told media.
Ample arrangements were made by police to see that the event passed off peacefully. Voluntary organisations also pitched in to help the patients.
There were separate queues set up for women, physically-challenged and senior citizens to ensure that the annual event went on smoothly.
The Bathini Goud family is said to be offering the 'fish prasadam' for the last 170 years.
In spite of many questions being raised on the medicinal properties of the 'fish prasadam' by scientists, rationalists and others, it has not stopped people from arriving in the city in large numbers every year to receive the 'medicine'.
According to reports, over 50,000 fish were sold by the end of the day, at Rs. 15 a piece compared to the last year’s 56,000 people who had come to consume prasadam.
