At least four persons were injured on Sunday when an escalator at the crowded Rajeev Chowk Metro Station suddenly started moving in opposite direction.
The incident occured in the afternoon near gate number six of the metro station, when the escalator, moving upwards, suddenly started slipping in the reverse direction, police said.
The snag led to a stampede-like situation as more than 25 people tumbled down and fell on each other. The CISF's quick reaction team swiftly rescued the victims.
The escalator kept moving in the opposite direction for about a minute before Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) staff shut it down. But by then, four persons including a woman and an elderly person had sustained injuries
"Four persons got injured in this incident. We have registered an FIR under Sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC and are looking into the matter. All the four person recieved minor injuries," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Jitender Mani told IANS.
