New Delhi: A security scare was sparked when a diffused grenade was found in a well on the Red Fort premises on Thursday evening in New Delhi.

A team of the National Security Guard (NSG) reached the spot and safely removed the grenade.

“NSG has safely removed the grenade from the red Fort, preliminary inquiry suggests of it being a very old grenade,” said DCP (North) Jatin Narwal.

The grenade was found by the Archaeological Survey of India officials, following which they alerted the police and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

In February, security agencies were thrown into a tizzy after live rounds and boxes of explosives were found in a well inside the Red Fort.

In a high-level meeting attended by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Aviation Jayant Sinha, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, besides others, on Wednesday, the government discussed plans to create a uniform security platform for all airports, including the 45 which were connected under a new regional connectivity scheme.

The Red Fort has been under heavy security since it was attacked by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in December 2000. Two soldiers and a civilian were killed in the attack.
