Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was on Friday convicted by a CBI court on charges of murdering a journalist in 2002. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on January 17. Apart from the Dera chief, three others -- Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh and Krishan Lal -- have also been found guilty by the court.
Dera chief Ram Rahim convicted in journalist murder case: Big Developments
1. Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted today for murdering journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati in 2002.
2. The 51-year-old sect head appeared in the case via video conferencing.
3. Journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati was shot at in October 2002 after his newspaper, 'Poora Sach', published an anonymous letter narrating how women were being sexually exploited by Gurmeet Ram Rahim at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa.
4. The journalist later succumbed to injuries and a case was registered in 2003.
5. The journalist murder case was handed over to the CBI in 2006.
6. Violence had erupted in Panchkula and Sirsa in Haryana in August 2017 following the conviction of Dera sect head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, leaving over 40 persons dead and scores of people injured.
7. The Dera chief is currently serving a 20-year prison term in Rohtak's Sunaria jail for raping two of his women followers.
