Nashik: Once again, second time within a month, the city police on Wednesday played a very important role during the transportation of the kidney for a Nashik woman who underwent a kidney transplant.
According to a report by Times of India, the police in Pune and Nashik escorted the ambulance carrying the kidney and helped in clearing the traffic. However, no green corridor was created this time as kidneys have longer shelf life.
The kidney reached Nashik in 3 hours and 40 minutes and was immediately transplanted. The patient was admitted to the Rishikesh hospital at Gnagapur Road for the crucial transplant.
Previously on May 10, two kidneys, blood vessels and eyes of a brain-dead patient were transported from Nashik to Pune through a green corridor.
Bhausaheb Morey, director of Rishikesh hospital told the newspaper, "A deputy commissioner of police from Pune with B+ve blood group admitted at Ruby hospital in Pune was declared brain dead by the doctors. Through counselling, the relatives were convinced to donate the deceased's organs on Tuesday afternoon."
"The doctors then went on to harvest the kidneys, liver and eyes. Incidentally, the hospital got a call inquiring about a kidney with the matching blood group. The patient who needed the kidney was the wife of a policeman in Nashik," he added.
There should be more awareness need to be created among people to make organ donations, he further said.
Devidas Patil, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) said "All the major points were covered in the city. All the police stations in the jurisdiction were instructed to provide necessary support and escort. Mobile patrolling bikes were also deployed on the road to clear the traffic."
He added that during this crucial second organ transport operation a recent workshop to deal with such situations was of great help.
