The BJP has named outgoing Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa for the Rajya Sabha elections in Assam. Tasa is nominated for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats, elections for which will be held on June 7.
Tasa was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from the Jorhat seat overthrowing a strong Congress legacy.
The party has, however, not named the candidate for the second seat from the state, but it may support its Assam ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for this.
Reportedly, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP is leaving one of the Rajya Sabha seats to AGP this time.
It should be mentioned that two of Assam’s seven Rajya Sabha seats will be vacated once the six-year tenure of former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Santiuse Kujur will come to an end on June 14.
