A 20-year-old Bangladeshi student who was studying at a university here has allegedly committed suicide, police said on Tuesday.
Mohammad Azazul Islam hanged himself at his rented accommodation on Monday, Shimla Deputy Superintendent of Police Pramod Shukla said.
No suicide note has been recovered, but it is learnt that Islam had posted on Instagram that he was going to commit suicide apparently over an unsuccessful affair, the DSP said.
Islam was a first-year student of bachelor of business administration (BBA) at the APG Shimla University, located on the outskirts of the city, Shukla said.
The student was a resident of Taro Ganj Bazar of Rangpur district in northern Bangladesh. The post-mortem has been conducted and a report is awaited, the DSP said.
The Bangladesh embassy has been informed and the body has been handed over to his cousin, Mohammad Habibullah, who is also studying at the same university, the officer said.
The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the officer added.
Habibullah is reportedly taking his body to Bangladesh for burying him at his native place.
