Azam Khan may resign as MP to contest UP assembly elections

In a big development, Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan said on Sunday that he is toying with the idea of resigning as an MP and contesting assembly elections. He is currently an MP from Rampur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

"[There are] No doctors or health facilities here. We're running a hospital & there can be attempts to dismantle it. Barrage should be constructed, it's construction is pending. Thinking of resigning from parliament, there's a possibility that I might contest next Assembly poll," he was quoted by ANI as saying.

The contest in Lok Sabha election 2019 was a first such fight for Azam Khan. Khan, who has previously been MLA in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, defeated BJP's Jaya Prada in recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Rampur went to polls on April 23 along with 115 constituencies across 15 states in the third phase of the election.

Jaya Prada, once a party colleague of Azam Khan, switched loyalty from the Samajwadi Party to the BJP, months before the Lok Sabha election began -- a point that Azam Khan, an SP leader, often mentioned.

Azam Khan's statements have often started controversies.  Even in the run-up to Lok Sabha election 2019, Khan and his close aides were in trouble because of their misogynistic comments aimed at Jaya Prada.
